Living The Dream 2024

December 2023

"Those who find beauty in all of nature will find themselves at one with the secrets of life itself." L.W.Gilbert

I was on my way to a photo shoot for a nursing reunion. You never know what the traffic will be like, so I left an hour and a half early, thinking traffic may be an issue.  As fortune would have it, no traffic...

What does a photographer do with an extra hour and a half?  Take advantage of whatever nature provides.  Mother Nature provided plenty.

This photograph was taken at Campbell's Boats on the shores of Lake Ontario near St Catherine's

January 2024

Kyle - Duirinish, SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

"I like a highland friend who will stand by me not only when I am in the right  but when I am a little in the wrong!" Walter Scott

One must-see, during our trip to Scotland, was getting close to the famous Highland Coo.

We tried to find any in our regular routes.  As it happens, I was waiting for Donna at a gift shop - something I am almost as good at as waiting for Donna in a quilt shop. I struck up a conversation with the two ladies at the cash.  When I asked them where I could find them, her reply was it was far away, almost twenty minutes up the road. I laughed as I would do ten times that to get up close.

We found this lovely herd exactly where she said it would be - that's one more off our checklist.

February  2024

Sligachan Old Bridge, Isle of Skye, Scotland

"A beautiful bridge is a poem" Tessa de Loo

The Isle of Skye deserved way more time than we allowed, So what's new about that? So did the rest of Scotland. This is the most difficult of decisions to make - what do you leave out? Our approach was to list the most significant sites that we wanted to see.  This bridge with the mountains in the background was on the list.

I've learned to maximize my time and take mere minutes versus the hours one can use to get the right shot. We only had the luxury of time in one place on the whole trip - Ailean Donan.

March  2024

Old Leach Cottage, Culloden Moor, Inverness,  Scotland

"Every person dies; not every person really lives." William Wallace

The Battle of Culloden, 1746. Bonnie Prince Charlie was forced to flee for his life. The battle lasted all of forty minutes. Some 1,000 of Prince Charlie's men were killed versus the 50 who died for the redcoats.

It was one of the truly magical places on our trip.  There was a hallowed ground feeling to the battlefield

April  2024

Coastal Ruin, Portsoy Harbour, Scotland

"Every Ruin has a story, what's yours?"

The entire coast was dotted with villages, harbours, castles and ruins. Most were quaint and beautiful.

May 2024

"The most beautiful rocks have faced the harshest waves," Kruti Joshi

Bow Fiddle Rock, Moray, SCOTLAND

There were several must-see photo opportunities, but only a few were higher on the list than Bow Fiddle Rock. As fortune would have it, it was fifteen minutes from our Cullen home base.

June  2024

Ailean Donan Castle, Dornie, Highlands of Scotland

"Allow me to stand by your side, and I'll always have your back," Outlander Quote

If I had just one subject to choose from all of the treasures that Scotland provided,   it would be Ailean Donan Castle in Dornie.  To get just the right shot, I booked three nights at an Airbnb within walking distance.     I went to the castle at sunrise and sunset, I was there in the rain and sun, at high tide and when the tide was out.

July 2024

"It doesn’t matter if it’s soggy or sunny; there are so many lovely roads and awesome rugged countryside in Scotland - that’s what makes it." - EDD China.

Corgarff Castle, Cairngorms National Park, SCOTLAND.

There is never enough time to see the whole country. This was literally a three-minute stop, we were going to be late for a Scotch tasting event.

August 2024

Sunrise, Braemar, Scotland

"Opportunities are like sunrises. If you wait too long, you miss them." William Arthur Ward

One of the things I am physically unable to do on holiday is sleep in.  I think I can get all the sleep I need or want when I return home. There is something magical in the peaceful start of the day as the sun rises. The world is a different place, less rushed and utterly serene.

This image was taken in the Scottish Highlands town of Braemar. it is a relatively small picturesque hamlet. It is home to the Highland Games, Braemar Castle and Balmoral Castle.

September 2024

Shiloh and Me, Oxtongue Lake, Ontario

"A dog is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than it loves himself."

Shiloh is our new family member, a Labrador Retriever.  At the assembly date of this calendar, she is a 40-pound bundle of pure energy. She is very accomplished and has quite the following on Facebook and, indeed this website.

Simply look up Shiloh's Excellent Adventures and you will find her.

October 2024

Fall Colours, Fernleigh Lodge, Kashwakamak Lake, Frontenac County, Ontario

"Anyone who thinks fallen leaves are dead has never watched them dance on windy days." Shira Tamir

We've travelled far and wide chasing colour, light and texture hoping to find the right combination to get the perfect shot.   Few places are as magical as a forest in the fall. The reds against a green or yellow background simply pop.

November 2024

Sunrise at Kashawakamak Lake Sunrise, Frontenac County, Ontario

"A sunrise is nature telling you that it 's time to cherish another day on earth. Enjoy Life!" Made Ui

This was one of the most fun sunrises to photograph, as I had nowhere to go. We had been at our location for five nights and days.  This was the only morning with a clear sky.
