Cuba

“The View from the Pink Convertible”

I wanted to see the non-tourist Cuba. I knew it would expose me to a different level of poverty from what I have seen before.

I have been exposed to poverty in several countries before. For some reason, this hit me harder and made me even more grateful for all my blessings.

In most cases, when we stopped, I had my driver ask for permission to photograph the people. After doing the portrait, I would leave a bag with gifts and money as a thank-you. It was never in advance. One common thing is that we had beautiful smiles no matter how hard their lives were. On a couple of occasions, we were refused and respected that.

Some pictures were taken from the car. We did not stop to get permission for safety and practicality.
